The Red Stonecutters Cottage

Doolin, North Clare

Self Catering

The Red Stonecutters Cottage is a renovated quarryman’s cottage with views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Aran Islands, the Burren and Doolin.

The cottage is on a small terrace of four cottages. It sits atop Doonagore, a spectacular high point above the village of Doolin with roads that run to Lahinch and Liscannor. There are fantastic views all around and great walking, all from the front door. It is on a quiet country road with nothing but gorse and fresh air.

The cottage has old-world charm with all the modern amenities. It sleeps two guests in the double bedroom, and you have a lovely lounge with a wood-burning stove, a fully equipped kitchen, and a front garden with beautiful views. There is also a washing machine and dryer.

The cottages were built for the stonecutters who lived and worked in Doonagore. They were created when the stone quarry was working around 1850, and Doonagore was a busy village. There is minimal left of the quarry workings now, and the area is mostly dedicated to cattle farming. Although the cottage now sleeps two, it originally would have been for a family of six or more, often including livestock.

An excellent exhibition in the Rock Shop in Liscannor shows the history of the Doonagore quarry.

Good to Know

There is plenty of off-street parking and free WiFi at the cottage.
